Inspiration
I have always been particularly intrigued by the physical space between an art work and the viewer in a museum setting. This space seems to be exquisitely curated, with the intention to either intimidate or embrace certain gaze from the perceiver.
I wanted to explore this space - to experiment humorously, with an interactive installation that I created, on the delicate dynamic between the physical distance of the viewer and the work of art in front of them.

THE PROCESS
Ideation & Inspiration
With the intention of exploring the spectatorship of art in a museum setting, the core idea of L’Atelier Rouge features the dynamic distance between the viewer and the artwork displayed. This constantly altering factor, created by the viewer and the canvas in front of them, is in some way invisible - it is not a permanant physical space but an open negative space constructed through active and temporal spectatorship.
I believe this space has a liminal status - it is a transitional stage, holding the threshold of earnest perception. I want to agument and visualize this space through the active interaction between the viewer and the canvas (one of the most prominent medium and museum display).
Inspired by the form of Jo Baer’s Untitled (Double Bar Diptych—Green and Red), 1968. the canvas’ edges are foregrounded relative to its interior expanse, drawing viewer’s attention to the periphery of the physical object. in contrast to the emphasis of traditional painting on the center in the image. With an OLED pixel display embeded in the center, a large-scale canvas is painted with borders framing blank space. The paint on each side is smoothly applied in vertical strokes, creating an emphasis on its (”the frame”) flatness.

An ultrasonic sensor is attached on the bottom of the canvas.
