Mission Statement

The Reveries is an interactive installation displaying 3 sets of poems each with 3 variations in space.

It attempts to investigate the co-authorship between artificial intelligence and human creative initiatives.

Inspired by cutting-edge synthetic media tools: DALL·E 2 by OpenAI and BERT machine learning framework for NLP (natural language processing) developed by Google, we wanted to explore the limit of artificial intelligence generated creative narratives.

THE PROCESS

01 | Verse by Verse

With our design objective in mind, the goal is to maximize the artificial intelligence creativity. We input the first line of the poems by our choice into Verse by Verse - an AI poem generator.

Here is the quatrain we got:

You will know her presence in the half-light,
New flowers upon her yellow head;
Swift as the night and full with the night,
She'll put the water true.

Making all men as the sea to sea-
She, the signal to my oxygen;
High in the haze of the ecstasy,
Encircle me, and take this hour.

Succor in the dark,
be sun in the
dark

02 | DALL·E 2

Employees can participate in meetings, view project progress, and view member information on the virtual platform. At the same time, a gift system is set up to promote employee’s inter-relationships.

When users get certain amount of gifts, they could be exchanged for tokens for shopping. Through these functions, employees are encouraged to practice workplace friendliness,better promoting trust and friendship between people.

We used “variation” function to generate more style-similar images. We turned the variations into short animations.

To further explore and render our idea of a serie of AI-generated poetry and imagery, we continued to create two poems:
︎︎︎

Public pride
You who were there
and are gone have come back.

Rose the sun like a subtle turbid night;
The water fell asleep in water warm,
Sharing the fire of my first impulse;
Divulge this secrets of that upper heart,
You had to catch me in the public way.

Light as a figure on a single way,
Pastures that walked alone against the ice
Beside the moon tints of purple and pearl,
Hold her own power in a world of pride!

I Write you my tongue mangled on your
A moon was in the convent that flew
Rose the wild starry flame on every shore.

When I beheld her face,
She smiled again her wistful sadness, and that night
Exposed with tender troth, and her disgrace Lay me in your humble might.

Blue as a loèr lip
Saw the wild eye, the rustic gay,
Doth I of my feel ship,
Soon would she wait on me that day.

03 | WHY RISO

After harvesting the creative content from the AI, we decided to further expand on the idea of a co-authorship between AI and human.

Giving AI full autonomy to creativity, we want to reverse the conventional role of human and machine in an artistic curatorial process.

With the AI as the artist, human as curators, we used a very simplistic and primitive way , risography, to render the colors.

Minimizing the RGB illusion of the digital screen, Risograph renders imagery with only four color channels : Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black). The manual process of creating a risograph highlights a human effort - to physically layer the Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow color channels together. The result of this nearly ritual labor imitates the illusion of color generated by digital screens, paralleling the human effort with the machine’s.

04 | Final Presentation

With a content almost autonomously created by AI, and a manual printing form that procedurally imitates how machine creates the illusion of color, we wanted to curate a tactile experience to highlight the texture of life and being human.
